This is one of my new favorite images. With all the storms around at the moment, it’s a great opportunity to get some really nice contrasting light. I love the balance of the brightly lit wheat with the dead trees and dark stormy looking clouds. Gives me a sense of the beauty and wisdom of the old. With the new and fruitful in its wake.

Anyhoo, this was taken with my favorite new toy, the Sigma 150-600 at 150mm f/11 ISO100. Hope everyone is going well. Not long till the Christmas holidays!

Silvereye or wax-eye (Zosterops lateralis) is a very small omnivorous passerine bird of the south-west pacific. Silvereyes breed in spring and early summer (mainly between September and December), making a tiny cup of grass, moss, hair, spiderweb, and thistledown, suspended from a branch fork in the outer reaches of small trees or shrubs. They lay two to four pale blue eggs, and two (or sometimes three) broods may be raised during each breeding season. The eggs hatch after about 11 days, and the young fledge after another 10 days. The juveniles are independent at 3 weeks and able to breed at 9 months.

I captured so many images of this cute little bird enjoying the cool water from the fountain on this hot summers day. I was out giving my new Sigma 150-600mm lens a good workout. This shot was captured at 250/sec, f8, ISO2000 @600mm. I am loving all the new photo opportunities I get with this lens.

Since my image appearing on the front cover of the local calendar to celebrate Bathurst’s Bicentenary I have been bailed up quite a few times by people commenting how much they like the image and how I went about taking it. I always enjoy talking photography with people. I thought I would share another image from that morning. This one is taken from a different angle. It’s a 30 second exposure to get enough ambient light on the courthouse but without over exposing the steel wool spin (probably went for 10 seconds or so). I love the deep blue sky in this exposure and the perception of depth from the arching embers. While it looks super impressive with such a long exposure while you doing it its not nearly as bright.
